Nigel writes: Hooray! The snow has gone! Tonight's ride was a replacement for last week's evening ride, which was cancelled due to ice and snow. It was a dry, overcast and very mild night, at around 8C much warmer than the sub-zero temperatures of only three or four days ago.
There were five riders out tonight: Pete, Ian D, Nick, Simon and me. I suggested we went south for a loop round the hills on the Essex border.
We headed south through Trumpington and the Shelfords to Whittlesford, Duxford and Ickleton. Here Simon had a puncture and we briefly split into two groups. I continued over Coploe Hill with Ian and Pete before turning west onto Royston Lane towards Chrishall Grange. Meanwhile Simon and Nick fixed the puncture and took the direct route along Grange Road to Chrishall Grange. Reunited once more we turned north to Fowlmere and Newton, where we stopped at the Queen's Head for a drink and a cup of brown soup.
Afterwards Nick and Simon headed home to Royston whilst Ian, Pete and I rode back to Cambridge via Harston. I was home by 9.45pm, having cycled
30 miles.
