CTC Cambridge

Email discussion group

Members of CTC Cambridge are invited to join our email discussion group.

How does it work?

This is essentially a mailing list to which any member can send questions or comments. When you send an email to the list, a copy of the email will be sent to all the other members.

The forum is provided by Google Groups. It works best if you have a Google account as this allows you to use the group's own web page to view and send messages (either instead of, or in addition to, using email) and to configure your settings. However this is not essential.

What is it for?

Members are welcome to use the forum to ask questions (relevant to the club, please) or take part in discussions. Occasionally members use it to invite others to join them for a personal ride. However in practice it's mainly used for announcements from club officers, such as last-minute changes to our rides. It is sometimes used by ride leaders to circulate the planned route for a ride.

If you don't join the group you may miss out on these announcements (we don't have any other way to send out bulk notifications to members) though will always ensure that the rides lists shown on our website (including the "next rides" list on the front page) are kept updated with any last-minute changes.

The volume of messages is low, typically just a few each week.

How do I sign up?

To join the group, sign into your Google account if you have one and then apply to join the CTC Cambridge email group.

When joining the group you will be asked whether or not you wish to receive messages via email or whether you will simply read them on the group's web page. Make sure you choose the option you desire (we recommend using email: you'll only get a handful each week so won't be swamped).

You will also be asked to provide your Cycling UK membership number (which will be sent to us). If you don't provide it we'll be in touch to ask you to for it.

Applications to sign up to the group are verified manually by the club's web officer: this may take a day or two.

If you have difficulty in signing up or using the group, do let us know. You can send email to webmaster@ctc-cambridge.org.uk.

If you would prefer not to sign up using a Google account, send an email directly to webmaster@ctc-cambridge.org.uk, including your membership number, asking to be added to the list.

Your privacy

If you send an message to the group (either via email or using the Google Groups web interface) a copy of your message will be sent to all the other members of the group (apart from any who have configured their account not to receive email).

A copy of your message will also be retained by Google groups so that current or future members can read it using the web interface. However any message sent by you will not be visible to non-members of the group.

It is our intention that membership of the email group is restricted to local Cycling UK members and we ask anyone who join to supply their membership numbers.

It is our intention that messages sent to the group remain private to the group so that only group members can see them. We ask members to respect this and not forward messages to non-members of the group, or publish them anywhere else, without the permission of the individual who sent them. However we cannot guarantee that this will not happen and you should bear this in mind if you include personal information in any messages you send to the group.

The group is administered by the club's web officer: you can see who the current post holder here. You can send them an email at webmaster@ctccambridge.org.uk.

Only the web officer and club secretary can see which email addresses have signed up to the group. This information is not available to other members. We won't use that enail address for any purpose unless we have a specific need to contact you and don't know of any other way to get in touch.

Simply joining the group does not disclose your email address to other members of the group (other than the web officer and secretary). However if you send an email to the group your email address will be visible to the other members when they receive your email.

How to leave

You can unsubscribe from the email group at any time: this is entirely separate from your membership of the club. This will remove your email address from the list of members.

To unsubscribe from this group and stop receiving emails from it, send an email to ctc-cambridge+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com or contact the web officer.

This will not delete any messages you have previously sent: these will remain visible to members who use the web interface. If you would like your old messages to be deleted, contact the web officer and request this.
