CTC Cambridge

News and discussion email group

Members of CTC Cambridge are invited to join our news and discussion email group.

How does it work?

This is a mailing list to which any member can send questions or comments. When you send an email to the list, a copy of the email will be sent to all the other members.

The email group is provided by Google Groups. It works best if you have a Google account as this gives you the additional option of using the CTC Cambridge email group web page to view and send messages and to configure your settings. However this is not essential.

What is it for?

It is mainly used for announcements from club officers, such as last-minute changes to our rides. It is also used by ride leaders to make provide extra information about a ride, such as the planned route.

In addition, members can use the email group to ask questions, take part in discussions, or make their own announcements. For example members sometimes use it to invite others to join them for a personal ride.

If you don't join the email group you may miss out on these announcements (we don't have any other way to send out bulk notifications to members) though will always ensure that our website is kept updated with any last-minute changes or cancellations.

The volume of messages is low, typically just a few each week.

How do I sign up?

If you have a Google account, the simplest way to join the group is to sign into your account (use this link if you are not already logged in) and then follow these steps. Note that emails will be sent to the address associated with your Google account.
  1. Click on this link: apply to join the CTC Cambridge email group. You will be prompted to provide your name and Cycling UK membership number: this information will be sent to the club's web officer.
  2. It may take a few hours or days for your application to be approved by the club's web officer. When your application has been approved you will receive an email telling your that your request to join "CTC Cambridge" was approved.
If you do not have a Google account, or do not wish to sign into it, then follow these steps:
  1. Click on this link: apply to join the CTC Cambridge email group. You will be prompted to enter your email address.
  2. Check your email and look for an email with the title "Confirm your subscription". Click on the "Join this group" button in the email to confirm that it it really you who wants to join the group.
  3. You should then see a message that you have successfully applied to join the group and are awaiting approval.
  4. It may take a few hours or days for your application to be approved by the club's web officer. You may receive an email from the web officer asking you to provide your name (if it is not obvious from your email address) and your Cycling UK membership number. When your application has been approved you will receive an email telling your that your request to join "CTC Cambridge" was approved.

That's it! After these steps have been completed, messages sent to the group by other members will be delivered to your email inbox. Since the volume of messages is low you may not receive any for a few days.

As a group member you will also be able to send messages yourself. To send a message to the everyone in the group, simply send an email to ctc-cambridge.googlegroups.com. Any messages you send must be sent using the email address you used when signing up.

If you have difficulty in signing up or using the group, do let us know. You can send email to webmaster@ctccambridge.org.uk.

Your privacy

If you send an message to the group (either via email or using the Google Groups web interface) a copy of your message will be sent to all the other members of the group (apart from any who have configured their account not to receive email).

A copy of your message will also be retained by Google groups so that current and future members can read it using the web interface. Messages will not be visible to non-members of the group.

It is our intention that membership of the email group is restricted to local Cycling UK members and we ask anyone who join to supply their membership numbers.

It is our intention that messages sent to the group remain private to the group so that only group members can see them. We ask members to respect this and not forward messages to non-members of the group, or publish them anywhere else, without the permission of the individual who sent them. However we cannot guarantee that this will not happen and you should bear this in mind if you include personal information in any messages you send to the group.

The group is administered by the club's web officer: you can see who the current post holder is here. You can send them an email at webmaster@ctccambridge.org.uk.

Google groups maintains a list of the names and email addresses that are subscribed to the email group. When a message is sent to the group, Google uses this information to forward a copy of that message to all members. The web officer and club secretary has access to this information, which will be kept confidential.

If you are a member of the email group we will normally only contact you via announcements sent to the group. However we may contact you individually, using the email address you use to subscribe to the email group, if we need to contact you for a specific reason and it would be inappropriate to contact you via the group.

Information related to your membership of the email group is entirely separate from any information (including email preferences) you provide as part of your Cycling UK membership.

Simply joining the group does not disclose your name or email address to other members of the group (other than the web officer and secretary). However if you send an email to the group your email address will be visible to the other members when they receive your email.

Replying to messages

If you have received an email from the group and wish to send a reply, you have two options:
  • Choose reply (in your email program) to send a reply to the person who sent the message, and no-one else.
  • Choose reply all to send a reply to everyone in the group, including the person only who sent the message.

How to leave

You can unsubscribe from the email group at any time: this is entirely separate from your membership of the club. This will remove your email address from the list of members.

To unsubscribe from this group and stop receiving emails from it, send an email to ctc-cambridge+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com or contact the web officer.

This will not delete any messages you have previously sent: these will remain visible to members who use the web interface. If you would like your old messages to be deleted, contact the web officer and request this.
