John writes: Seven riders met at the more popular time of 2:00 p.m. Our route headed west beside the Barton Road and through the villages of Barton, Comberton, Toft and Bourn and thence into Cambourne. Having taken the first track into Cambourne rather than the second we spent some time winkling our way out to the north to Elsworth. Turning left at the Poacher we now were riding into a very strong and unexpected headwind which slowed our progress considerably through the villages of Hilton and Graveley. Here we turned south but the wind still headed us.
Having gone through Toseland and Croxton we reached the T-junction. I had intended to turn right and take the attractive route through Abbottsley but because of the wind delays we turned left and took the direct route to Waresley. Just outside the latter we met John Ross and Mike CC who told the garden centre closed at 4:30 p.m. When we got there we found it was closed so we repaired to the Duncombe Arms for drinks and a snack.
Afterwards we took the direct route back to Cambridge through Great Gransden, Caxton and Bourn now with a following wind. My GPS recorded a modest
36 miles for the round trip. But for the wind it would have been a very enjoyable ride.
