On a beautifully sunny late summer evening, four riders turned out for this evening's ride to Barton. In addition to regulars Cheryl, Daniel and myself, we also welcomed Bob B, a club veteran on his first evening ride.
With the nights now beginning to draw in, the evening rides are now starting half an hour earlier, at 6.30pm. This meant that we were able to enjoy about an hour of warm evening sunshine before it began to get dark.
Tonight's route took us south out of Cambridge along Hills Road until we had passed Addenbrooke's, where we turned right onto Granham's Lane. This took us over a small rise to Great Shelford. From there we took the usual route to Little Shelford and the edge of Whittlesford.
Just before we reached Whittlesford we turned right towards Newton. After crossing the M11 we stopped to inspect a nature interpretation plaque by the side of the road.
From Newton we continued north-west in a more or less straight line, though Harston, Haslingfield, Harlton, The Eversdens and Kingston. As we did so the sun began to set, and by the time we reached Kingston it was quite dark, and beginning to get cold. It was appropriate, then, that here we turned east along the B1046 to Toft, Comberton and Barton.
We stopped at The Hoops in Barton for a brief drink and social chat. We had been cycling in the dark for about half an hour before reaching the pub, and so we resolved to have a shorter ride next week and an earlier pub stop.
We returned to Cambridge along the A603 cycleway. I was home by about 9.45pm. Our mileage this evening was
25 miles.
