Nigel writes: Tonight was a lovely late summer evening: warm, sunny and with a touch of that pleasant but somewhat melancholic feeling caused by harvested fields, low evening sunshine and the feeling of rapidly-shortening days. This evening's riders were Jim, Neil, newcomer Sven and me. At the start we had our usual route discussion at which I proposed a route and everyone else agreed.
We set off east from Brookside across Parker's Piece, down to the river and then out along the river to Fen Ditton. It had felt somewhat cool at the start, but it wasn't long before the sun came back out and the temperature rose, giving us a very pleasant warm ride all the way to the pub stop.
From Fen Ditton we continued east through Quy and Bottisham to Swaffham Bulbeck. There we turned right to Dullingham, where we turned right once more towards West Wratting before turning finally back towards Six Mile Bottom and Great Wilbraham. There we stopped for drinks at The Carpenter's Arms. The pace had been fairly quick this evening so we arrived slightly early at about 8.20pm.
After a pleasant half hour in the pub we set off back to Cambridge. Whilst we had been in the pub the sun had set and it was beginning to get dark, so we turned on our lights for the return journey through Fulbourn and Cherry Hinton. I arrived home in Cambridge at 9.45pm, having cycled
33 miles.
