Nigel writes: Our first daylight evening ride of 2014 took place on a warm but dull evening, with the air somewhat hazy due to
atmospheric pollution. Despite that there were five riders out tonight: Gareth, John R, Jim, Paul and me - though we nearly missed Jim and Paul since they joined the ride on Trumpington Road a minute or two after we had set off.
Today's ride followed the same triangular route as on previous occasions, and started off by heading south along the busway and DNA path to Great Shelford. From there we continued south along NCR 11 to Sawston. Gareth was in characteristically energetic form tonight, and we reached Sawston we agreed that he would go ahead on his own and meet up with us later.
This left Paul, Jim and me to make a slightly more sedate progress west along the off-road path that leads over the river to Whittlesford.
Whittlesford
When we reached Whittlesford Church we turned north-west and took the road to Newton. From there we continued to Harston where we crossed the A10 on our way to Haslingfield. There Paul left us to head home, leaving Jim and I to continue on through Harlton and the Eversdens to Kingston.
By now the sun had set and it was getting dark. Fortunately we didn't have far to go, and when we reached Kingston we turned east for the final few miles along the B1046 through Toft and Comberton to Barton. There we stopped for drinks and bowls of chips at The White Horse. As we passed through Toft we caught up with John, who we had thought had been behind us but was in fact ahead.
Already waiting at the pub was Gareth. After a pleasant half hour there we returned back to Cambridge along the Barton cycleway. I arrived home at a relatively-early 9.15pm, having cycled
28 miles.
