Graham writes: This was my first time leading a ride with the CTC so I arrived early and well-prepared with route sheet handouts and guest rider forms just in case. In due course five other members arrived; a mix of familiar and new (to me at least) faces.
We set off through town and across Parker's Piece and then via Emmanuel Road to meet NCRÂ 51 at Midsummer Common. Many people were out walking and cycling enjoying the pleasant weather. We followed NCRÂ 51 out of Cambridge as far as Swaffham Bulbeck where we turned right onto Swaffham Heath Road.
Heading towards Dullingham the traffic was sparse and this meant plenty of socialising was possible whilst taking in the views. Combine harvesters were working in many of the fields and tractor/trailers were carrying grain back to the farms.
At Dullingham we turned right into Balsham Lane and carried straight on to Six Mile Bottom Road. Taking a little loop through Weston Colville and Weston Green we then turned south and made our way down to Streetly End arriving in Horseheath for our afternoon tea stop at the Old Red Lion Inn.
The day riders had already arrived but there were still plentiful amounts of sandwiches and cake to be had. (See all-day ride photo for proof!)
In due course we all headed off en masse, and, although the wind was now against us, it was not too debilitating. I took a direct route home at the back of the group to ensure we did not lose anyone. The group split as people took their own separate routes. As it was, I was soon back in Fulbourn and heading towards Mill Road along 'The Tins'. I had cycled 39 miles altogether.
