Nigel writes: After a spell of cold wet weather, today saw something of a return to normal. This evening was warm, dry and sunny, but with quite a strong southerly wind that gave us a cooling headwind on the way out, and a nice tailwind on the way home.
My companions this evening were Mike K, Paul, Rob, Chris, Neil S and Tiia. We set off south along Trumpington Road and Porson Road to Long Road, where we joined the busway cycleway to Addenbrooke's.
We continued south along the DNA path to Great Shelford. From here we followed the familiar route through Little Shelford, Whittlesford and Duxford to Ickleton, where Chris stopped to fix a problem with a cleat, and I stopped to fix a puncture. We were therefore running about ten minutes late when we reached the top of Coploe Hill, where Mike and Tiia had been waiting for us. Tiia also had a puncture, so we waited whilst she and Mike fixed it before posing for the obligatory group photo.
We continued south to the cross-roads where we turned right onto the lovely, narrow, scenic and undulating Royston Lane.
This brought us to Chrishall Grange. Here we turned north. With a tailwind behind us we made rapid progress to Fowlmere and Newton, arriving at the Queen's Head at about 8.45pm.
I ordered a drink and the house speciality, a mug of brown soup. After a pleasant half hour chat we returned back to Cambridge via Hauxton, the A10 and the whole length of the busway cycleway. I was home by 9.50pm, having cycled slightly under
30 miles.
