Tina writes: Seven riders assembled at Brookside on a misty, autumnal morning to ride out to Bourn, three new riders – David, David and son Finn, Erika (on great new bike!), Julia and Ian. There is really only one circular route which can be ridden clockwise or anti-clockwise and Tina had chosen the latter leading everyone through town, where we paused for a photo outside Kings' College, down Garrett Hostel Lane to cross the river and onwards to the Coton path, now strewn with fallen leaves.
From Coton we turned up the hill along the cycle path, past the American Cemetery at Madingley where it started to level out. Unusually for a Saturday morning, we all seemed to be of similar pace, with no-one trailing and no-one wanting to rush on ahead (apart from Julia to snap some action shots!)
We continued along the 'old' A428, crossing the new A428 just visible through the fog below and then turned left down to Bourn.
At David's suggestion we detoured via Caxton End, where three more daring members of the group rode through the ford, while the rest of us took the safer side path option.
We arrived at the Abantu cafe at about 11.15am and after checking out the cake selection, settled for cosier inside seating area. Service was rather slow, but the Christmas Crumble cake was definitely worth waiting for!
After a leisurely break, we left at about 12.05pm and set off on the return journey along the B1046, past Bourn Golf Club and through Toft, Comberton and Barton to join the A603 cyclepath. David and Finn left us at the Grantchester roundabout and the rest of us continued back into the City arriving at Brookside around 1pm. Hope everyone enjoyed the morning and that new riders will join us again one Saturday or maybe Sunday morning. Total distance:
20 miles.
